They publish in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and now, like everyone else, they're moving into the Claremont, N.H. areas to fill the space left by the recently folded Eagle Times. If you have experience with this company, please share. |

Is it just me or is it significantly easier to get in touch with musicians than actors/actresses? How do you even do it? I'm trying to find contact information for specific movie and TV actors and actresses (or even just info on who their PR companies are) for a series of articles on a specific topic, but everywhere I search just has bogus phone numbers or addresses, and I really don't want to go the crazed-fan route anyway. All I can really find are MySpace pages, but I doubt any are actually checked by the actors/actresses themselves, and even if they are, I'm sure my message will get lost in the masses. Have any of you had to do this? And if so, what’s the best strategy?
Thanks so much |

| Two-parter: Insurance and jumping ship |

My boss just announced that our insurance company raised the rates to $610 per employee per month. Since the company refuses to negotiate it down, my boss is now capping how much the paper will pay at $400 per employee per month and anybody who wants to stay on the paper's plan has to pick up the rest themselves. Has anybody else had this happen? The boss said he's spoken with publishers are many other similar papers and they've supposedly had their employees chipping in for health care for years. What's your experience with this?
Second part for anybody thinking about jumping ship: What's life after newspapers? I've been thinking lately about getting an MFA or even a grad degree in journalism to try to make myself more marketable and wait out the the bleeding. I've also thought about pursuing sociology or political science, although I'm less sure what I'd do with those degrees. So is anybody else thinking of/made a career change? What did/will you do? |

mood: sad music: Birdsong

Eagle Publishing closed its doors today with less than 12 hours' warning. They published the Eagle Times, a daily covering the Claremont, N.H. and Springfield, Vt. area, and several weeklies.
I am saddened, but not surprised, by this turn of events. They started making the same mistakes the other dailies are making: putting the bottom line ahead of product quality. Thus, veteran reporters who knew and understood the area were fired in favor of unseasoned recent college grads; stories were truncated and often ran several days after they were timely or relevant; staff morale crashed.
Today's edition, the last, is a masterpiece of denial. All the explanation we readers got were a few lukewarm comments from the publisher about how sad this was. On the Web site, the only mention of the closing is under state news -- for the wrong state. However, both versions have rather large ads proclaiming to advertisers that they reach 90,000 readers per week. Whoops!
I feel terrible for my colleagues and friends over there, especially a freelancer who may not get paid after having provided page 1 coverage almost every day on the trial of a couple of anti-tax nutcases with a massive arsenal.
Good luck, colleagues. |
